TRON USDT Transaction Failed, Energy Insufficient: fee_limit

TRON USDT TRC20 Transaction Failed on Insufficient Energy: fee_limit and TRX

When a TRC20 USDT transaction fails on chain for insufficient energy, the official TRON documentation names the result OUT_OF_ENERGY: the caller's Energy budget ran out before the contract finished, and Energy already consumed is not refunded. That budget is the smaller of two values: the Energy that fee_limit converts to, and the Energy the address can cover with its own Energy plus its TRX balance. A low fee_limit causes failure, and so does an address short of both Energy and TRX. If the failure came from low Energy and low TRX and you would rather not burn more TRX, consider topping up the address with GasStation Quick Rental before resending, because it recommends an Energy amount from your estimated number of transfers and delegates it to the address. If only fee_limit was too low, raise it and resend.

Two Sources of OUT_OF_ENERGY: The fee_limit Cap and Insufficient Energy

Whether a GasStation top-up is the right fix depends on which kind of failure you have. The TRON developer documentation on FeeLimit expresses the caller's usable Energy as a minimum:

> callerEnergyLimit = min(callerStakedEnergy + (balance − callValue) / sunPerEnergy, fee_limit / sunPerEnergy)

From this the documentation describes two failures: a low fee_limit can cause failure even with ample staked Energy, and insufficient staked Energy and TRX balance can cause failure even when fee_limit is high enough. In both cases the TRX burned does not exceed fee_limit.

The fixes differ (the author's reading of the formula):

  • Ample Energy and enough TRX, yet OUT_OF_ENERGY: fee_limit was too low; raise it and resend.

  • Little Energy and little TRX: the address has insufficient energy; top up TRX, rent Energy or stake, then resend.

Energy and TRX Consumed When a TRON Transaction Fails on Insufficient Energy

Topping up enough Energy in one go, and sizing a GasStation order generously, matters because of how failed transactions are charged. The TRON smart contract errors page states that OUT_OF_ENERGY means the transaction consumed all the Energy fee_limit allowed before the call finished, and Energy already spent is not refunded.

The same page separates two other failures: a REVERT is an intentional abort that charges only the Energy used before it, and OUT_OF_TIME counts the whole Energy allowance of the execution as consumed. The paying for resources page adds that when a transaction reverts with OUT_OF_ENERGY, consumed Energy is still charged up to the limit.

In other words, every failed resend charges Energy or burns TRX once more. Find the cause before pressing send again.

Why the Same TRON USDT Transfer Uses Different Energy

Leave a margin when you order by estimated count on GasStation, because TRON's documentation says two transfers of the same token can use quite different Energy.

The recipient's state. Many TRC20 contracts keep balances in a mapping. When the recipient's balance slot goes from zero to nonzero, that storage write costs 20,000 Energy; updating a nonzero slot costs 5,000 Energy. TRON's reference for USDT is about 64,000 Energy to an address that holds USDT and about 130,000 Energy to an address with a zero balance.

Timing. The same page notes that the Energy factor of popular contracts changes each maintenance period, so the same operation a few hours later can use a different amount.

The documentation recommends estimating Energy immediately before broadcasting, or using the on-chain max_factor for an upper bound.

Four Checks Before Resending a USDT Transfer After Insufficient Energy

Topping up Energy, for example with GasStation Quick Rental, is the third check; the first two find the cause (a checklist compiled by the author):

1. Read the result. Query the transaction with wallet/gettransactioninfobyid and confirm whether it is OUT_OF_ENERGY, REVERT or OUT_OF_TIME.

2. Estimate Energy. Use wallet/triggerconstantcontract or wallet/estimateenergy with the real recipient and amount.

3. Fix the cause. Raise a low fee_limit; if Energy and TRX are both short, top up TRX, stake TRX, or use GasStation Quick Rental to add Energy by transfer count.

4. Set fee_limit to an upper bound. The documentation's conservative formula is fee_limit = floor(base_energy_estimate × (1 + max_factor)) × EnergyPrice, where max_factor is getDynamicEnergyMaxFactor divided by 10,000, shown as 3.4 on the documentation page.

If the wallet has not sent anything yet and only keeps showing the prompt, the three ways to restore the transfer are in fixes for insufficient energy on TRON USDT transfers. The TRON and GasStation pages above were checked on 20 October 2026.

Summary

If a USDT transaction failed on insufficient energy and the address is short of both Energy and TRX, consider topping up with GasStation Quick Rental before resending, because it recommends an amount from your estimated transfer count and delegates it to the address. If Energy and TRX were ample and OUT_OF_ENERGY still appeared, raise fee_limit. Either way, estimate Energy before you resend.

FAQ

Where the USDT Goes After a Failed Transaction

A transaction that ends in OUT_OF_ENERGY reverts, so the USDT transfer did not execute and the USDT stays on the original address. What was charged is the Energy already consumed and any TRX burned for it. Next, check the balance on a block explorer and resend once the cause is clear.

Choosing a fee_limit Value

TRON's documentation says there is no universal right fee_limit; it is a cap, and the unused part is not charged. A USDT sender can estimate the transfer's Energy first and then apply the max_factor formula for the cap; if the wallet sets it automatically, compare it with your estimate before resending.

Resending Right After a Failure

Resending before the cause is clear lets the same cause fail it again, and Energy is charged again. A safer order is: read the failure result, estimate Energy, top up Energy or raise fee_limit, then send. If Energy is the gap, GasStation Quick Rental can take an order by estimated transfer count.
